Turn The Key And Go!

FashioNXT 2023

Open the door, Sit in the seat, Turn the key, and go!

This year’s FashioNXT showcase was titled "Turn The Key And Go". The inspiration comes from the Mission Raceway. In Mission BC where I live, during the summertime you can hear the sound of the races echoing throughout the town. We're in a race, and each model has a role to play in the Tammi Anne Barker race team. We have our grand marshal, our racer, the mechanic, reporters covering the race, the badass boss who owns the team, spectators, and, of course, our fierce competitor.

Prelude

VIFF: August 2023

VIFF is a collective of local Vancouver designers, models, makeup artists, and photographers. Every month or so, under the creative direction of the formidable Steve Faustin, they put on a show at various venues around Vancouver, with the goal of promoting, encouraging and growing independent local talent. Tammi Anne Barker is proud to be a part of the VIFF family. August 2023 we unveiled our first full production run of garments, codenamed “Prelude”

Encore

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend 2022

Tammi Anne Barker showed at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend #25. The Encore collection was a celebration of Tammi Anne's body of design work, from 2018 to present.

Marie Antoinette was about to be beheaded! We couldn't have that. Luckily, Tammi Anne and Marcel Barker hopped into their DeLaurean, drove to Versailles, and time travelled her to Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. They think she'll get along fabulously there. What do you think? Will she be able to fit in? What shall happen to Marie Antoinette?

Fireweed

Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend 2021

Fireweed is a bold, pink wildflower that grows from sea level to the subalpine zone, emerging after a forest fire or other destruction.

The roots it puts down help fight erosion. Herbivores feed on the shoots and pollinators are drawn to the bright flowers. Fireweed to is a symbol of reemergence, regrowth and renewal. Fireweed is defiantly optimistic, just like us.

Lavender Dusk

FashioNXT 2019

Tammi Anne Barker presented Lavender Dusk at FashioNXT in Portland, Oregon in October of 2019.

The collection was inspired by the crackling of a campfire, the sun dipping down behind the mountains, the flaming sky changing to lavender as the air grows chilly. Cowboy shirts and prairie skirts carried the dream of riding an untamed Mustang into the sunset.

Fancy

Vancouver Fashion Week F/W 2019

I grew up in Mission, British Columbia in the 1980s, back when it had a population of less then 20,000 with gravel dirt roads. As a kid I remember going into town, more than an hour away, and watching in the pouring rain under a big black umbrella Fats Domino and his band perform. I will never forget it.

My dad was a bus driver who worked nights. He is a great singer and would always play his guitar for me before he got ready for work. My love of the country, classic rock and roll and hippy folk music, paired with my love of MTV, made its way into my collection over 35 years later.

Everyday Antoinette

FashioNXT 2018

People associate Marie Antoinette with silks, but after she was married, she was given an estate of her own; Petit Trianon. When she sought respite there she wanted to feel the sun on her face, to move freely, to walk in her garden without being bound by silks. She commissioned her dressmakers to make her a dress, free of stays, in cotton lawn. This is how I see her: Marie Antoinette en coton.

Fashion is never just about the clothes. It’s about the people who wore them, the era they lived in, their everyday. What was Marie Antoinette’s everyday?
